The Vaisala Group sells not only innovative equipment but also solutions and services. Worldwide, Vaisala solutions safeguard air and road traffic and help in localising and forecasting hurricanes.
Vaisala is the best-known company in the world for developing and supplying weather measurement equipment and systems. As number one, finding adequate growth is becoming increasingly challenging.
“Expanding from a supplier of equipment into a supplier of solutions is a natural way of seeking growth,” says Helena Marjaranta, Director, Corporate Communications.
From weather information to action
Vaisala’s weather measuring equipment, services and solutions are used in general meteorology, hydrology, aviation-weather and road-weather applications and areas such as energy and insurance.
Precise, reliable and continuous weather measurement data is the basis for the daily weather forecasts and warnings produced by meteorological institutes. By using the weather information, road and rail organisations can make decisions about the required upkeep, such as salting the roads.
In air traffic weather information is indispensable for guaranteeing the safety of planes landing and taking off. In emergency situations, such as when flood or storm warnings are issued, every second is valuable and the rapid availability of the right data is of primary importance.
In more than one hundred countries
Vaisala develops, produces and markets products and services for measuring the environment and for industry’s measurement needs. The aim is to provide a basis for a better quality of life, environmental protection, safety and productivity.
Vaisala’s customers are institutes of meteorology and hydrology institutes, road and rail organisations, armed services, aviation organisations, private companies in sectors that are dependent on the weather and industrial companies in different sectors around the world.
Vaisala’s products are used in more than one hundred countries. The main markets are in North America and Europe. Growth is focused on Asia and the Pacific Rim.

In the eye of a hurricane
Vaisala’s products and services support decision-making by authorities in critical situations
Vaisala’s radiosonde is the most-used instrument for high-altitude weather measurement. The company’s dropsonde model measures and predicts the direction and force of hurricanes. With this information the weather authorities in the United States, for example, can determine where and when hurricanes will strike.
The dropsonde, which is equipped with tiny parachutes, is launched from an aeroplane into the eye of the hurricane. As it drops, it sends back a stream of information to a receiver system at the hurricane centre in Florida. The information is used for issuing forecasts and warnings and for taking decisions about possible evacuations.
Besides hurricanes, other extreme weather phenomena, such as thunderstorms and tornados, may cause emergency situations.
