New York’s Design Weeks were host to an exotic visitor from Finland in May. Three-dimensional animal figures treated with Tikkurila Oy’s products created both enchantment and amazement. A herd of four-legged animals that tempted you to touch them was both seen and heard.

Hardcore New Finnish Design, which was arranged in association with New York’s Design Weeks, presented 25 Finnish design projects and concepts in cooperation with Finnish design companies. A wide selection, ranging from graphic design to product design, was on display.

Tikkurila’s idea was to present at its stand ‘usual products so that people would really stop and want to touch the surfaces’.

Talking with musical instruments

“We were very successful in our objective. Our exhibition was considered to be an interesting way of showing a consumer product such as paint,” says Riitta Eskelinen, Tikkurila’s Brand Manager.

The animal figures thought out by the design agency Pentagon Design and Tikkurila together aroused great interest. The almost natural-sized figures were harnessed as mannequins for Tikkurila’s product range, inviting you to touch them.

The animals in the exhibitions also had voices in New York. Each animal had a tone composed for it: the cow spoke through a cello, the horse through a piano, the calf through a flute and a pig with percussion. The sounds were the responsibility of sound designer and composer Kim Kuusi.

New and old

Behind all the finger and sound contact Eskelin says there is also fact. Tikkurila’s oldest product on display in New York has been on the market for 70 years but something new is being developed all the time.

“We offer paint options that look and feel different. In the selection you’ll find magnetic and chalkboard paints, textured finishes and pearlescent paints and glazes.”

“The paints represent practical Finnish design that can be seen in the design and colours,” Eskelinen says.
