Jorma Ollila, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of mobile phone giant Nokia was last December elected vice-chair of a group of five wise men who will ponder the EU’s future.
Felipe Gonzalez, the former prime minister of Spain, was elected to chair the group of five wise men. In addition to Ollila, the northern corner of the EU is represented by former Latvian president Vaira Vike-Freiberga, who will also be vice-chair.
The group of wise men was created originally on the initiative of French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The task of the independent think tank is to ponder the future of the European Union up to 2010.
The matters to be dealt with by the group may include strengthening the Union’s competitiveness, sustainable development, energy issues and climate protection, immigration and the struggle against international crime and terrorism. Particular attention will be paid to how the EU might reach citizens better and meet their expectations.
Finland feels that the establishment of the group is a good means of pondering the EU’s challenges and opportunities in a new way.
