Biowaste becomes tomorrow's fuel
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland develops technologies
that are aimed at reducing environmental pollution and using
renewable raw materials more efficiently. The aim of VTT's
Clean World research theme is a cleaner living environment.
Biotechnology can be used to develop new and effective methods
that will process cheap waste biomass - agricultural waste,
side streams and forest waste - into products with value.
The production of bioethanol will promote sustainable development,
since the ethanol replaces some or, if so desired, almost
all the petrol as fuel. The effect on carbon dioxide emissions
is considerable.
The demand for bioethanol is increasing on a global scale.
The USA chemical industry estimates that 25 per cent of organic
chemicals will be produced from renewable raw materials in
2020 compared with the present figure of around five per cent.
The European view is that the figure will be 30 per cent in
2025.
