Forest Industry:
Environment-friendly wood transport
Stora Enso Metsä was first in Finland to use a second-generation
control system for its timber transport. The system calculates
the most efficient routes from the forest to the mills and
minimizes trucks carrying empty loads, so that considerable
cost savings are realized and emissions caused by transport
operations are reduced.
Stora Enso's new control system is unique in that it enables
wood procurement optimization throughout the entire country,
not limited by procurement region boundaries. When determining
daily driving routes, the system, which utilizes satellite
navigation and GSM and GPRS technology, considers the tight
schedules, the assortment of wood the mills require, the location
of roadside timber stacks and even road conditions. Routing
can be extended beyond Finnish borders if necessary.
Stora Enso's aim is to guarantee uninterrupted wood deliveries
with environmental awareness using sustainable methods. Every
year the company delivers 25 million cubic metres of wood
raw material from Finland, Russia and the Baltic states to
the company's pulp and paper mills and sawmills.

to 50 million cubic metres annually.
