Electronics
and Electrotechnics Industry:
Ticket ordering by mobile phone
A ticket for use on Helsinki transport can be ordered easily
through the text message function on a mobile phone. Helsinki
City Transport (HKL) was the first in the world to introduce
the ordering of single tickets by means of a mobile phone
at the beginning of 2002.
Consumers have given an enthusiastic reception to the service,
which is produced by Plusdial Oy. More than a million mobile-phone
tickets are being sold a year, and figure is still rising.
Mobile phones will be an increasingly important medium for
transport information. HKL is aiming for passengers to receive
real-time information about transport more easily, wherever
they are travelling. It is possible, for example, to obtain
information about changes to timetables. There are also bus
and tram stops where displays that use satellite positioning
can be found showing the times of the next departures from
the stops. New applications are being invented all the time.
