Help from original drug for Parkinson’s disease
The Parkinson’s disease drug entacapone is one of the original drugs developed by Orion Pharma. Entacapone considerably improves the effect of levodopa, the basic drug for the disease, bringing new hope to Parkinson’s patients that is based on a new mechanism of action.
When patients are better able to control their movements, they obtain relief in daily basic functions that require motor coordination, such as walking, talking, writing and dressing.
Entacapone and its trade names (Stalevo®, Comtess®/ Comtan®) are very well known internationally by neurologists who treat Parkinson’s disease, and these days they are also part of the basic treatment for the disease. Orion Pharma produces both the entacapone drug and tablets in Finland.
There are about six million people suffering from Parkinson’s disease throughout the world. The occurrence of the disease is increasing as the population ages.
