Press release 26.5.2006

Winner of the next Millennium Technology Prize will be announced on 15 June

The winner of the world's biggest technology award, the one-million-euro Millennium Technology Prize, will be announced on 15 June. The biennial award celebrates innovations that have a favourable impact on the quality of our lives and human wellbeing both now and in the future. The roots of the prize lie in Finland.

The aim of the Millennium Technology Prize is to bring technology closer to people. It seeks to highlight innovations that assist and enrich our everyday lives and also have the potential for future development. The winner of the 2006 Millennium Technology Prize will be announced in Finland on 15 June.

The award is Finland's recognition for life-improving innovations and is made by the Millennium Prize Foundation, an independent fund established by Finnish industry and the Finnish state in partnership. Modern Finland is a welfare state at the forefront of global competitiveness and high technology.

The award ceremony will be organized in association with the ECOFIN meeting in September. The first-ever Millennium Technology Prize in 2004 was awarded to Tim Berners-Lee for the invention of the World Wide Web.
