Nomination of candidates for Millennium Technology
Prize begins

The nomination of candidates for the Millennium Technology Prize, the
biggest of its kind in the world, has started. The award is made for a technological
innovation that brings significant improvement to the quality of life. Nominations,
which can be made from all areas of technology and all parts of the world,
must be submitted by the closing date, October 31, 2005. The award is made
by the independent Millennium Prize Foundation, which has been set up through
collaboration between the Finnish private and public sectors.
Candidates
for the Millennium Technology Prize can be nominated by all science and engineering
academies, universities, research institutes and high-tech companies throughout
the world. They can be an R&D group or and individual person. Precise
instructions on a nomination can be found in the end of March on the Foundation’s
website at the address www.millenniumprize.fi. According to the instructions,
the appropriate documents must arrive at the Millennium Prize Foundation by
October 31, 2005 at the latest.
The winner
of the award will be chosen by the Board of the Millennium Prize Foundation
on the recommendation of a high-level international selection committee, which
in 2006 will comprise: Professor Jean-Claude Charpentier (France), Professor
Marja Makarow (Finland), Professor Bengt Nordén (Sweden), Professor Charles
M. Vest (USA), Professor Akito Arima (Japan), Professor Juhani Kuusi, Professor
Bengt Stenlund (Finland) and the Chairman, Professor Pekka Tarjanne (Finland).
The Millennium
Technology Prize is awarded every other year and is worth one million euros.
The objective of the award is to guide the development of technology in a
human direction by rewarding both R&D work that is aimed at improving
the quality of life and sustainable development.
The first winner
of the Millennium Technology Prize in June 2004 was Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor
of the World Wide Web. The next winner will be announced in June 2006 and
the award will be made in Helsinki in September 2006.
