Capital spending on environment, health and safety by the chemical industry in environmental, health and safety (EHS) work reached a record high of EUR 124 million in 2007. A quarter of this was targeted at improving energy efficiency and a fifth at waste management i.e. improving materials efficiency.

In January-June, the S Group's retail sales grew by
9 per cent compared with the corresponding period a
year before. Sales by the grocery trade rose by 8.8
per cent. In the same period, the S Group posted aggregate
profit before extra-ordinary items of EUR 162 million.
The cooperative enterprises gained 55,500 new customer-owners
in the first part of the year.

Technology Prize are now being accepted. The worlds
largest technology prize is awarded for an innovation
which improves the quality of human life and encourages
sustainable development. A new element in the 2008 award
will be publicity for a selection of the technological
innovations that are improving quality of life and have
been nominated for the prize. Both the names of the
Finalists and their inventions will be announced before
the Winner is declared.

Capital spending on environment, health and safety
by the Finnish chemical industry reached record figures
in 2006. The sector invested a total of some EUR 86
million in improvement of environment, health and safety
issues, an amount equal to more than 14 per cent of
fixed investment by the sector and a rise of more than
one fifth compared with 2005.

Production in the Finnish chemical industry increased
in 2006 by almost 4%. Still, the differences between
sub-sectors were remarkable. In global economy year
2006 seems to remain the peak year of the recent business
cycle. So far the change downward is expected to be
