The S Group’s sales show good growth; earnings lower than a year ago

The S Group’s retail sales grew by 13 per cent in January–June, but higher capital expenditures on business locations, coupled with smaller capital gains on disposals than a year ago, led to a decline in the S Group’s earnings year-on-year. Profit before extraordinary items in January–June was EUR 122 million, compared with EUR 162.9 million a year earlier.

The 2008 Millennium Technology Prize was presented to Professor Robert Langer today in Helsinki for developing innovative biomaterials for controlled drug release. The world’s largest technology prize is awarded by Technology Academy Finland for a technological innovation that significantly improves quality of human life and promotes sustainable development. President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen handed Professor Langer the prize of EUR 800,000 and ”Peak”, the prize trophy, at the Grand Award Ceremony on Wednesday afternoon.

Capital spending on environment, health and safety
by the Finnish chemical industry reached record figures
in 2006. The sector invested a total of some EUR 86
million in improvement of environment, health and safety
issues, an amount equal to more than 14 per cent of
fixed investment by the sector and a rise of more than
one fifth compared with 2005.

sub-sectors were remarkable. In global economy year
2006 seems to remain the peak year of the recent business
