| An
inexpensive permit gives fishermen access to all Finnish waterways,
most of which are clean and rich in fish.
Finnish leisure fishing is unique. It does not require special
skill or expensive equipment.
Although the manufacture of fishing lures has become industrial
and product selections have increased manifold, the basic
nature of fishing has not changed. It remains an outdoor hobby
that is available to everyone year-round.
The northern Kuusamon Uistin Ltd is Finland's largest manufacturer
of metal lures and well-known for the brand names Räsänen,
Professor and Kitkan Viisas. There are over 500 models, colours
and sizes to choose from. The company puts out half a million
lures each year.
A small workshop has turned into an important lure maker
and a tourist attraction. In addition to the Nordic Countries,
the company also exports its products to Russia, Great Britain
and Germany.
The company employs thirty workers in the northern town of
Kuusamo. Last year's sales exceeded a couple of million euros.
Tens of millions of euros exchange hands in the fishing market
in Finland alone. It means that each Finn spends at least
10 euros per year on fishing gear according to the Finnish
Game and Fisheries Research Institute.
