A three-dimensional map of downtown Tokyo is currently being modeled in Helsinki. The pilot version of the map was presented in Japan in September. The finished product should be available in 2002.

A three-dimensional map shows the traveler his or her environment and nearby buildings from street level. The 3D city map is designed as a base for personalized guide service applications. The three-dimensional model of the city, that depicts the actual scenery, serves as a basis for VisitGuide route guides. Various businesses, hotels, restaurants and event organizers can use these guides to make it easier for their customers to find to their destination.

VisitGuide guides can be used through an ordinary Internet browser. A MobileGuide application for cellular phones brings a three-dimensional map on request on the display of a mobile phone or palm-top computer. The application was developed and city model built by the Finnish company Arcus Software. The company has previously created a 3D map of downtown Helsinki. The map covers some 20 square kilometers and features over 4,000 buildings.
