In March, VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) opened a research laboratory for the study of heavy vehicles and work machines.

The laboratory is significant even by international standards and enables e.g. all engine exhaust emission tests in accordance with the latest EU exhaust emission directive. The lab has a heavy chassis dynamometre, which is akin to a rotating highway and enables measurement in conditions corresponding to driving in actual traffic. The new VTT laboratory is used for the development of engines, control systems and fuels.

The laboratory will also be used for various international research projects and for studies commissioned by companies to support their own product development. For example, for years VTT has co-operated with Sisu Diesel Oy on the development of diesel engines. The company, which manufactured over 24,000 heavy diesel engines in 2001, believes that the new laboratory will further improve co-operation with VTT. The laboratory investment costs totalled EUR 4.8 million.
