Finland
is to decide on the construction of new nuclear power this spring.
In January, the Government gave its approval to a proposal by
privately-owned power company, Teollisuuden Voima Oy, to build
a fifth nuclear reactor by a vote of 10-6. The Parliament can
either ratify or annul the Government proposal this spring.
Finnish industry is in favour of more nuclear power because
it is concerned about energy shortages in the country if no
new capacity is built. According to Finnish Energy Industries
Federation estimates, energy consumption in Finland will increase
by over 20 per cent by 2015, which corresponds to a new capacity
requirement of 3,500 megawatts. The fifth reactor would produce
1,000 -1,600 MW.
In 2000, Finland produced 27 per cent of its energy from
nuclear power, 18.2 per cent from hydropower, 11.5 per cent
from biomass, 10.5 per cent from coal and 10.1 per cent from
natural gas. About 15 per cent of energy was imported.
