The world's largest biomass power plant was awarded second
prize in a competition of the use of renewable energy sources.
Alholmens Kraft, and Timberjack Energy Technology were awarded
in a competition promoting the use of renewable energy resources,
energy efficiency and related innovation. The award is given
out annually by the Austrian O. Ö. Energiesparverband
organisation.
Alholmens Kraft is a pioneer in the use of renewable energy
sources. The power plant uses logging waste, such as tree
tops and branches, collected from cleaning and harvest sites.
Logging waste is wrapped into tightly packed stick logs using
Timberjack's collection method. The annual output of the Alholmens
Kraft power plant is approximately 1.3 TWh of electricity
and 0.6 TWh of heat.
A total of 1,300 projects from 98 countries participated
in the Energy Globe Award competition. First prize in the
corporate category went to a Spanish wind power initiative.
