Ratification of the decision in principle in the Finnish Parliament launches the next stage in the nuclear power plant project

Press release by TVO

Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) received with satisfaction the information of the positive decision in principle from the Parliament. - A positive decision means that now the company can start the actual work for carrying out the project and to produce in due course competitive and CO2 emission free additional electric capacity, states TVO's President and CEO, Mr Mauno Paavola.

Ratification of the decision in principle makes it possible for TVO to continue the preparations of the project and evaluation of the plant alternatives. The location of the new unit will be either Olkiluoto at Eurajoki or Hästholmen at Loviisa.

- Work for the construction of a new plant unit can now really be started. In practice, it means negotiations with plant suppliers and various other parties, finalizing of bidding documents and organizing the project as well as other measures required for the realization of a large scale investment.

TVO received a decision in principle for the construction of a nuclear power plant unit which is either a boiling water or pressurized water reactor. The electric output of the plant unit will be 1000 - 1600 MW depending on the selected plant.

Finnish high-standard, also internationally valued, nuclear know-how will be used in the construction and operation of the new unit. The cost estimate for the new unit is EUR1.7-2.5 billion, depending on the plant size. In the plant unit investment, the share of domestic work, materials and equipment is estimated to be about one half of the total costs.

Paavola is satisfied that, besides the positive decision from the Parliament, the application was during the whole handling process widely supported by various sectors of the society. - Also the households and the service sector, in addition to the industry, will benefit from the electricity produced by the new unit and this is most likely the cause for the wide support to the application, figured Paavola.
