Sea routes soon to lead to Vuosaari
The most modern harbour centre on the Baltic Sea is being
built at Vuosaari in Helsinki. It will include a cargo harbour,
logistics area, traffic channels and a business park. It is
the biggest Finnish harbour project of all time.
All of Helsinki's cargo functions will be concentrated on
Vuosaari Harbour, which will be completed in 2008. This will
bring increased efficiency and an overall approach to logistical
operations. Vuosaari will have good connections with different
parts of Europe and Finland.
The harbour project office believes that Vuosaari, as an
efficient and, in terms of traffic connections, incomparable
harbour, will in the future also attract cargo flows and customers
that have not been seen before at Finnish ports.
Rapid movement of cargo
Vuosaari Harbour, which will replace an old shipyard, will
cover an area of 150 hectares, 90 hectares of which will be
a new area that will require 12 million cubic metres of fill.
The business park next to the harbour will cover 75 hectares.
Ships will reach Vuosaari Harbour via an easily navigable
32-kilometre fairway. The harbour will hold 15-20 ships, depending
on size.
Moving cargo onwards from the harbour has been made as efficient
as possible. The gate area will have automatic access control
and registration. If permits and documents are in order, vehicles
will be able to proceed to the loading and unloading point
without stopping.
Cargo will only need to stay in the harbour for a few hours
at the shortest. Containers and trailers will be unloaded
and moved directly to the logistics area for further handling
or to the harbour field for onward transportation.
The basic structures of the harbour have been chosen from
tried and tested options so as to be durable and efficient
in Finnish conditions. State-of-the-art technology will be
applied on the cargo-handling side and for telecommunications
solutions.
