Trio increases striking capacity

The Technology Industries of Finland have started an extensive one-hundred-million-euro programme of measures to develop Finnish technology companies. Striking capacity is badly needed to give a thrust to growing economic areas and a global reconstruction.

"We want to speed up the change; we don't oppose it. Finland's location far away from many growing market areas and the high cost level are making it very challenging for companies to keep their competitive position," stresses Harri Jokinen, who heads the programme.

The TRIO programme challenges companies and company networks to invest in technology, strategic regeneration and internationalization between 2004-2009.

"Constructing growth for the future will require exceptional courage, risk-taking and the desire to develop on the part of entrepreneurs. The programme will offer partnership for implementing these growth strategies."

820 companies involved

The programme is directed in particular at suppliers of systems and components in the sector. As the main purchasers are outsourcing their operations and wanting to buy increasing amounts from a decreasing number of sources, systems suppliers must put themselves into a position to become major international players. This will also mean specialization by component suppliers.

The aim is to involve 820 companies, 20 of which will develop into international systems suppliers. A hundred systems suppliers will develop into strategic partners with their main suppliers, and 200 companies will become specialized systems suppliers. In addition, 500 SMEs will specialize by investing in new technology, thus achieving a strong position in company networks that are going international.

The co-partners in the programme will provide the companies with a wide range of choice in measures and financing. Participating in the programme, aside from the Technology Industries of Finland, will be the Metalworkers' Union, the National Technology Agency of Finland, the National Research Centre of Finland, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Labour, the Finnish Work Environment Fund, the Finnish National Fund for Research and Development, Finnvera Oy, Finpro, Fintra, Finnish Industry Investment Ltd, T&E Centres and the SME Foundation.

Finland's biggest

The technology industry (the electronics and electrotechnics industry, mechanical engineering industry and metals industry) plays an unusually big role in Finland. It is the biggest industrial sector in Finland, covering over 80% of the industry's R&D investment, almost 50% of the turnover and 60% of exports. More than 70% of the products go to global markets. The Technology Industries of Finland's task is to ensure that the technology industry is in a position to succeed in international competition.
