Oy Silenta Ltd aims to reduce noise that is harmful to
health. The latest cordless technology offers new dimensions
in the hearing protectors that the company produces, allowing,
for example, the use of a mobile phone even in a noisy environment.
The purpose of Silenta's products is to dampen a loud noise,
protect the hearing and improve the quality and safety of
the environment. More than 90 per cent of the production is
exported. There are over 50 export countries, the most important
market areas being North and South American and Europe.
"The company has operated under its own brand for more
than 40 years, but these days it is also acting to an increasing
degree as a contract manufacturer for global dealers. This
has made it possible to succeed on a global scale," says
Arimo Ristola, the company's managing director.
Speech in the middle of noise
In the information society the availability of people and
communication are matters of increasing importance in a noisy
environment. New technology is bringing new products and new
demand.
"When communication connections are added to hearing
protectors, the user can communicate on a local or even a
global level, if necessary. At the end of 2004 we will be
launching a new hearing protection family equipped with Bluetooth
technology. The products in this family will make it possible
to use a mobile phone even in the middle of noise," Ristola
says.
Further demand will be created by occupational safety legislation.
"The demand for hearing protectors will increase in the
next few years as occupational safety requirements become
stricter in the EU region," Ristola predicts.
From industry to leisure time
Silenta makes both basic and electronic hearing protectors.
Basic, i.e. passive, protectors dampen sound waves with traditional
technology. Electronic protectors dampen sound waves actively
thanks to the in-built technology.
Differences between the traditional and electronic versions
lie in the dampening effect, user comfort and factors associated
with communicating. Protectors equipped with a radio can have
a positive effect on worker motivation, especially in a monotonous
job.
Silenta's products are used by industry, the armed services
and during leisure time. The biggest single customer group
is industry. On the recreational side, they are used by those
with an interest in shooting, hunting, renovating and gardening.
