The European Chemicals Agency began operating in Helsinki
in June 2007. The city is now growing into an important meeting
place in Europe for players in the chemicals industry.
"At the turn of the year there will be about one hundred
people working at the Agency. In 2008 the Agency will hire
about a hundred new employees and the final figure, about
450 people, will be achieved in 2010," says Jukka
Malm, Chairman of the Management Board of the Chemicals
Agency.
"It is pleasing that working at the Chemicals Agency
interests many experienced experts in the sector. Helsinki
is tried and proven as being of interest extensively throughout
Europe."
The Chemicals Agency is one of the biggest of the European
Union's some 20 separate agencies. It is also one of the few
agencies with the right to make binding decisions.
In October the Agency's Management Board elected Geert Dancet,
a Belgian and long-serving Commission official, to be the
Agency's permanent Executive Director.
What is the REACH Regulation?
The EU's REACH Regulation means
the Registration, Evaluation and Authorization
of Chemicals. Producers and importers operating
in the EU region are obliged to assess substances'
risks. The aim is to promote the safe use of
chemicals, improve the protection of health
and the environment, and maintain the competitiveness
of the EU's chemicals industry.
