Information technology has moved forest machines into
a new era. Ponsse Oyj is the only machine manufacturer to
offer IT solutions from the timber harvesting to the mill.
In Finland almost all timber harvesting is done these days
using information technology satellite positioning,
digital maps and distance diagnostics.
Ponsse's advanced Opti4G control system for wood procurement
includes computer software for controlling the entire wood
procurement chain: navigation to the felling, felling, drawing
up harvesting instructions and stand maps, reporting, follow-up
and transportation instructions.
"The control system takes care of the efficiency and
precision of the felling work and enables precise handling
of the trunk. Thanks to the system, fellings can be planned
centrally in advance and the yield from them maximised,"
says Communications Director Jari Mononen.
Information technology also supports sustainable development.
IT can be used for planning the shortest routes and taking
account of the protected parts of an area.
