A shirt that communicates with a running computer. A running
shoe that measures distance and speed. A system that gives
the athlete precise and personal feedback. Information that
the athlete can use in order to train more effectively.
All this is possible when the Finnish company Polar Electro
and the sports equipment manufacturer Adidas combined their
expertise. The fruit of the cooperation, the world's first
fully integrated training system, Project Fusion, will be
coming onto the market. It will combine Polar's heart-rate
measuring technology and Adidas's technical sports textiles
and shoes.
The system includes Adidas's adiStar Fusion textiles and
running shoes and Polar's RS800TM running computer, the WearLink®
technology integrated into the textiles and an s3TM running
sensor placed in the shoes. "The system in practice becomes
part of the athlete," says Pekka Ylänkö, Polar
Electo's international PR manager.
Technology improves training
The running sensor, which collects information about distance
and speed, is integrated into the sole structure of the running
shoe in the system. The core of the system, the running computer,
shows the heart rate, distance, speed, energy consumption,
time and course profile. Shirts, tops and vests complete the
set-up, operating in harness with the technology.
All the information registered during the training is sent
via a transmitter to the wrist computer from which the athlete
can follow the information in real time. After training the
information can be transferred to a computer on which the
system analyses the performance and give details to the athlete.
"The best characteristic in the innovations is, without
doubt, its user-friendliness. The combination of top technologies
in the same package makes training simpler, more pleasant
and more precise," says Ylänkö.
The Project Fusion training system, which is designed for
athletes, will be on sale in the autumn of 2006.
