A group of clothing students asked themselves the question:
how does paper on a reel turn into clothing? And the answer
turned out to be garments in many designs that are meant for
wearing. In her work Vilja Kujala combined paper with wallpaper
found in a garage.
"I sought a female style with the idea that 'a woman
must bloom'. Altogether there's an underskirt, a top skirt
made of wallpaper, a corset and a detachable upper part. In
addition to the paper and wallpaper, we needed glue and paste,
and also a sewing machine," says Vilja, who has been
studying for four years.
"Working with paper was really exciting. Paper is more
delicate and sensitive than fabric, but at the same time it
is a usable and very workable material. The paper outfit is
made for wearing even though I wouldn't recommend it in the
rain," Vilja says with a laugh, considering the possibilities
of a paper wedding dress.
The purpose of a two-week intensive workshop at Häme
Polytechnic was to fashion clothes from paper. The teacher
was Sun Jong Ann, a Korean-born fashion-designer. The clothes
on the course were fashioned out of Galerie Lite paper provided
by M-real.
