The Bone Exercise Monitor shows whether the amount and
quality of daily exercise are enough to develop a bone's density
and prevent osteoporosis. The monitor of Newtest Oy, a company
that operates in the physical-exercise technology field, keeps
track of daily exercise and everyday chores in real time.
Osteoporosis, which is becoming more widespread, is an insidious
illness that develops over the long term. The first sign is
often a fracture, the most common being wrist and hip fractures
and fractures of the vertebrae. In Finland osteoporosis is
classified as a national disease, with more than 400,000 Finns
suffering from it.
The right kind of exercise strengthens the bones and prevents
osteoporosis. Good exercise for the bones includes jumping
and running and all daily movement in which the body works
up speed and meets resistance.
"The Newtest Bone Exercise Monitor can ensure that physical
movement is the right kind in order to strengthen the condition
of the bones. The monitor is small and light; it travels easily
on the waist from one task to the next," says Marko Ala-Ketola,
the managing director.
Exports the target
The bone mass in women starts to decline naturally after
they reach the age of 30. The most important group using the
monitor are women from the ages of 30 to 55.
The Bone Exercise Monitor has recently been launched in Finland.
Exports are starting to France, Spain, Sweden, Holland, Belgium,
Switzerland and Greece. Discussions are also taking place
with Japan.
"Interest in the monitor is global. The challenges and
expectations are great. Our aim is to make the product a major
export product," Ala-Ketola says.
