Waste paper collection is being improved in Finland by the deep collection method. The aim is to raise the amount of paper reclaimed to 75 per cent in two years and at the same time to make Finland the leading country in the world in the recycling of paper.

The achievement of this target lies in the hands of two companies: the nationwide paper-collection company Paperinkeräys Oy, which is owned by paper producers, and Molok Oy, which has developed the deep collection of waste technique.

The cooperation supports a campaign to improve Paperinkeräys's recovery of recyclable paper, the aim of which is to achieve the number one position for Finland in the collection of paper and to enter the Guinness Book of Records. At present Germany holds the lead with a figure of 74% recycled paper.

"Achieving the target will in practice mean that 50 kilos of each 60 kilos used per inhabitant will be reclaimed instead of 20 kilos," says Veikko Salli, Molok Oy's managing director.

After installation, two-thirds of the deep collection container remains underground, out of sight. The benefits are not only tidiness and user-friendliness but also an excellent collection capacity, savings in space, and fire safety. The method can be used for collecting and recycling all the main waste classifications, such as household waste, bio-waste, paper, glass and small-scale metals.

"The whole potential of deep collection is growing enormously. We're expecting tremendous growth every year," Salli says.

Molok is one of the best-known waste collection brands. There are close on 50,000 Molok containers in more than 20 countries throughout the world. The biggest targets for export are the Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden and Canada. There is also growth potential in Brazil, Australia, the Arab Emirates and Israel.

Finnish environmental technology in Brazil

In March Molok Oy made a major breakthrough on the Brazilian waste management market. After a test period of several years the Comlurb waste management company, which operates in the Rio de Janeiro area, gave the seal of approval to Molok containers for the collection of waste at properties and parks.
"Official approval will make a considerable growth in volume possible on a market where the potential is limitless," says managing director Veikko Salli.

One of main factors in the choice of Molok were the collection capacity of the deep collection method and the absence of any odour in the hot climatic conditions.
