There is plenty of demand throughout the world for those
with skills in container handling. In recent years Kalmar
Industries has grown into a major supplier in Asia and India.
Kalmar is a global provider of container and heavy-duty materials
handling equipment, automation applications and related services.
Every fourth container or trailer transfer at terminals around
the world is handled by a Kalmar machine.
During the past twenty years container-handling transactions
have increased by nine per cent a year and the growth trend
is expected to continue. In 2005 the value of cargo transported
in containers was almost 300 billion dollars.
"At this moment a lot is going on in Asia and India
in particular. With the economic growth in these regions,
the focus and investment are being directed at container handling
and terminal operations," says Keijo Parviainen, Vice
President (Intelligence & Automation).
"Our position on the Indian market, for example, has
grown dramatically. We are delivering at present several RTG
cranes, and we have made a five-year maintenance agreement."
We have been operating on the Chinese market for fifteen years.
This year we opened a new plant in China, thanks to which
production has trebled. Our plants in China and Malaysia are
producing equipment for the entire Asian market."
Kalmar has an extensive sales and service network in Asia
in places such as Peking, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore.
Big and well known
Parviainen says that the Kalmar brand is extremely well known
throughout the world. "When you're a big player, you're
also well known. Our worldwide experience in container handling
helps us in finding a solution to the most diverse situations
you can face in container handling. Our customers have learnt
to appreciate this experience."
The company has delivered more than 80,000 machines to more
than 140 countries. Customers are harbours, terminals and
industry. The product range includes ship-to-shore cranes,
RTG and RMG cranes, straddle carriers, reach stackers and
terminal tractors. In addition, the company offers a wide
range of services such as spare parts, maintenance and service,
financing solutions and maintenance contracts.
Kalmar also leads the way in port automation applications.
At present Kalmar is automating the entire container field
of the biggest terminal at the port of Hamburg. The first
stage of the project includes 15 automated reach stackers
and their associated systems.
