Electria, a training and testing plant for the production
of electronics, is unique. Electria brings together students,
researchers and companies specializing in electronics and
micro-system technology. There is nothing like it anywhere
else.
Electria produces training, research and development services
for companies in the electronics sectors. It is the companies
that make the training and testing plant internationally unique.
"There are various training and testing plants maintained
by an educational establishment or other private parties,
but they lack a corporate presence," emphasizes Heikki
Tupola, the head of Electria.
"At Electria a company gets trained employees, additional
training for its staff and support for its research under
the same roof. It can also rent facilities at the plant either
permanently or when necessary."
Cooperation brings added value
Laboratories for research and development in electronics
and microsystem technology are to be found at the testing
plant. It also has a top-grade cleanroom, where research and
development can be carried out and training given on cleanroom
working.
"The corporate orientation in the planning is not a
bad idea in the training either. Our students are able, while
studying, to become familiar with the very equipment that
they will be needing in their working lives," Tupola
says.
The cooperation brings added value to the production chain:
the development of products and production procedures is combined
at the plant. "An innovative product does not on its
own guarantee commercial success," Tupola points out.
Concept creates interest
The training and testing plant went into action in the spring
of 2004. Tupola says that the operations have started excellently.
The concept has also aroused international interest. "Visitors
have come from Japan, Korea, Germany, Switzerland and Estonia.
At present we are acting as consultants in the construction
of a similar unit in Estonia," Tupola says.

ELECTRIA IN BRIEF
Electria's areas of focus are surface mounting, and
the related soldering procedures, precision mechanics,
microsystem technology, cleanroom culture and technology.
The background forces and financiers of the plant are
electronics colleges operating in the Helsinki region,
the City of Vantaa, a municipality that borders Helsinki
to the North, and the companies in the area. The plant
is administered by EVTEK Institute of Techology.
