A bioglass product that helps in the treatment of hypersensitive teeth has been developed in Finland. Bioglass is a safe, natural material that reduces bacteria. It is composed of the same constituents as normal window glass, although its mixture ratios are different.

New compositions are being sought for bioglass constantly because different applications have different requirements - in some it must dissolve quickly and in others it must remain in the body for as long as possible. Bioglass dissolves in the body in the body through a regulatory mechanism and attaches to both bone and soft tissue. It also makes renewed bone grow.

The first bioglass product of the Finnish Company Vivoxid Ltd is for the treatment of hypersensitive teeth. Dental canals that are open are blocked with powdered bioglass, thus preventing extreme pain. Being a safe, natural material, bioglass does not cause allergies and is well suited for treating teeth in place of the plastic products that were previously used.

Vivoxid believes that it will next obtain a sales licence for surgical applications for the cranio and maxillofacial area. Bioglass will make it possible to treat chronic infection of the frontal sinus - by filling it with bioglass granules. Bioglass is particularly well suited to repairing damage to the back of the eye, because when it reacts with damaged bone, it promotes its regeneration and growth. The company is developing and producing new-generation biomaterials for applications in cranio-maxillofacial surgery, dental science and orthopaedics. This year the company will be applying for a sales licence for cranio-maxillofacial products in the EU.
