PLANAR DISPLAYS TRUST IN FINLAND
The American company Planar Systems, which produces flat
displays, announced in August 2002 that it would be concentrating
the production of electroluminescent (EL) displays totally
on Espoo in Finland. At the same time operations at the Evergreen
plant in the United States will be terminated.
The transfer shows the confidence and the high expectations
we have for the production group in Finland, says Balaji
Krishnamurthy, the president and CEO of Planar.
EL displays are well-known for their durability, resistance
to extreme temperatures and good contrast, which makes a wide
viewing angle possible - including from the side. From a commercial
viewpoint, however, only the production of monochrome format
displays makes sense.
EL systems are still the overwhelming alternative for
some applications. We meet those needs, but the market is
increasingly wanting full-colour displays. Planar has to change
with the market, says Krishnamurthy, justifying the
adequacy of one production plant for producing the required
number of EL displays.
Planar came to Finland through a corporate acquisition in
1991. The purchase of the operations of Finlux at Espoo, which
was making electroluminescent displays, was Planars
main opening to the European market. One of Finluxs
most interesting gifts to Planar has been the expertise in
ALD (atomic layer deposition) processes.
