Graphics and Media Industry:
SMART PACKAGES AND LABELS
Packaging and printing products incorporate new features
almost every day. It is already possible to print microprocessors
on paper. A good example of the amazing future possibilities
of the packaging industry is the 'smart packaging', developed
by the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) Biotechnology
together with the industry. In smart packaging, the package
is not there only to protect and promote the product and make
it more recognizable, but it also communicates the quality
of the content and the integrity of the package. For instance,
the smart package of the future warns the consumer when the
contents of the package are about to be spoiled. The packages
can offer new business opportunities also for the graphics
and media industry. At the moment, some Finnish beer bottles
have labels that Edita Label has produced using the Thermoprint
method. These labels indicate when the beer is cold enough
for drinking. In the future, hidden microchips in labels can
communicate prices which can then be debited directly from
a charge card while the products are still in the shopping
cart. They can also give the oven instructions on how to prepare
the food.
