FOREST INVENTORIES BY SATELLITES
Forest inventory methods have been continually improving.
Finnish applications of space technology and employment of
the latest information technology have facilitated quantum
leaps forward. On-site surveys have been supplemented with
mapping and satellite imaging information. This has produced
an integrated real-time system that helps to accurately track
changes in timber resources and monitor the diversity and
health of forests.
This forest tracking system, developed by Finnish research
scientists, holds extensive international potential. Even
tracking the condition of forests throughout the globe is
possible at reasonable cost.
