Food Industry:
SMART PACKAGING
The quality of food is maintained in many ways. When foods
that go bad easily are being transported or stored, smart
packaging can ensure their condition remains good. The food
packaging can, for example, warn the consumer when the products
sell-by is approaching. Likewise, the packaging
can also give the alarm if the temperature at which it is
kept or stored is wrong.
Rafsec, which is part of UPM-Kymmene Corporation, produces
smart labels that make the wireless transmission of information
possible. Information on a products cycle from its production
to end use can be recorded on them and read from them. Rafsec
began developing smart labels on the basis of radio frequency
technology in 1998 and the first commercial deliveries took
place in 1999. Packaging technology is also being developed
by M-real and Stora Enso.
