Food Industry:
CHOLESTEROL-REDUCING MARGARINE
The Finnish Benecol products contain stanol esters that effectively
reduce cholesterol levels. The first product to include this
substance, the Benecol margarine, was the result of decades
of development work. The cholesterol-reducing effect of sterols
was known as early as the 1950s. Research conducted toward
the end of the 1980s proved that stanol ester derived from
sterols reduces cholesterol most safely and effectively but
a way of incorporating it into foodstuffs was not found until
the Raisio Group's research scientists came up with Benecol.
Today, the Benecol family includes such products as vegetable
and cheese spreads.
