Electronics and electrotechnics Industry:
ELECTRONICS FOR HURRICANE RESEARCH
Vaisala's Airborne Vertical Athmosperic Profiling System
(AVAPS) and dropsonde represent new technology designed for
high-flying aircraft. During the mission, aircraft flies above
50,000 feet and releases dropsondes used in hurricane and
weather research. The system enhances the effort to predict
hurricane tracks and give early warnings to the population
of impending emergencies. Researchers are using dropsondes
to get more precise information on hurricane behavior. The
dropsonde measures and transmits pressure, temperature and
relative humidity as well as wind information every half a
second to the AVAPS receiving system on the aircraft. The
data can be stored for analysis or sent via a datalink to
a research and command center. Vaisala develops and manufactures
electronic measurement systems and equipment for meteorology,
environment, sciences, traffic safety and industry. The Vaisala
Groups's competitive edge lies in the product leadership.
