Chemical Industry:
A DRUG FOR HEART FAILURE
After more than ten years of dedicated R&D work, Orion
Pharma launched its new Simdax® (levosimendan) drug in
Sweden in the autumn of 2000. Simdax is an innovative proprietary
pharmaceutical compound developed by Orion Pharma for the
treatment of acute decompensated heart failure, a life-threatening
condition. The drug acts inside the heart muscle cells via
a completely new mechanism, known as calcium sensitisation,
which improves the ability of a weakened heart muscle to pump
blood. Marketing permits will be sought for the new drug first
within the EU and later on also in the USA and elsewhere in
the world.
