Chemical Industry:
SUPER CELLULOSE
Few industrial products are as broadly applicable as carboxy
methyl cellulose, or CMC. It is justifiably known as super
cellulose. The product already has hundreds of applications
and new ones are under development at Noviant. In oil drilling,
CMC makes slurries easier to handle and helps with settling.
With paper coating, the additive provides the appropriate
viscosity and stability for the coating paste. Added to ice
cream, CMC prevents the formation of frozen water crystals,
and with pharmaceuticals it guarantees that pills dissolve
in the digestive system. Depending on the application, the
raw material for super cellulose will be either wood-based
varieties of pulp or so-called cotton linter - that is, short-fibre
cotton waste. Noviant is the world's largest producer of CMC
with a 30 per cent market share.
