Chemical Industry:
GENES FOR COMMERCIAL USES
The chemicals industry's 1999 innovation award was presented
for biotechnological development work based on the harnessing
of DNA mobilisation elements for commercial uses. The resulting
"Template Generation System TGS" can now be
used as a multipurpose molecule biology tool. It is particularly
well suited to determining the base order of DNA or DNA sequencing.
The product holds significant world-wide market potential.
It is also a step toward new technologies, and notable future
applications are to be expected.
This innovation is an excellent example of successful co-operation
between a university research team and a single company. The
successful innovation was produced and commercialised by Harri
Savilahti's research team at the Helsinki University's Biotechnology
Institute and the Espoo-based Finnzymes Oy.
