Morning Visit at Olkiluoto nuclear power plant site

Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) is a private electricity generation company owned by Finnish industrial and power companies, to which the company supplies electricity at cost price. The company owns and operates two nuclear power plant units on the west coast of Finland in Olkiluoto, in the municipality of Eurajoki.

November 2000 Teollisuuden Voima Oy filed an application with the Finnish Government for a decision in principle on a new nuclear power plant unit. In January 2002 the Government made the decision in principle in favour of the new unit. This decision was ratified by the Parliament in May 2002. The project then proceeded to a bidding competition that took over a year.  In October 2003 Olkiluoto was selected as the site for the new unit on technical and financial grounds.

On December 18, 2003, a consortium comprising AREVA and Siemens AG won a turnkey contract from TVO to build a new nuclear power plant at the Olkiluoto site, where two nuclear units are already in operation. The evolutionary EPR (European Pressurized Water Reactor) will be implemented in this new nuclear unit called Olkiluoto 3. AREVA NP, an AREVA and Siemens company, is supplying the nuclear island (comprising the reactor and associated systems), while Siemens is responsible for the conventional island (turbine and generator). Olkiluoto 3 is scheduled to go on line in 2010.

The new nuclear power plant unit is built at the west end of the island of Olkiluoto, next to plant units Olkiluoto 1 and 2. The total area required for the new unit is about four hectares. The new power plant unit will utilise the existing infrastructure in Olkiluoto to a maximum extent. The infrastructure is also complemented in many respects. The new power plant unit will provide permanent employment to 150 - 200 people. During the annual outages, some thousand people will be employed.
