Improvement in industry's prospects for year
end
Finnish industry expects improving prospects and rapid growth
for the end of the year. The recovery, however, will not be
straightforward: growth is starting with fluctuations because
of the continuing uncertainty in the economic situation. Without
positive news from the United States a clear-cut turn cannot
be expected in Finland.
Finnish industrial companies received more orders between
April and June, and exports also showed strong growth in almost
all sectors. Although orders in hand are continuing to strengthen,
the growth in orders is expected to slow down a little at
the beginning of the autumn. Expectations regarding exports
and output are lower than in the spring. Unemployment is forecast
to show a slight increase.
This information appears in the business tendency survey
published in August by the Confederation of Finnish Industry
and Employers. An improvement was expected by 27 per cent
of the respondents and a deterioration by 5 per cent, while
68 per cent thought that the position would remain unchanged
in the next few months. The balance that measures economic
prospects fell last spring from 29 to 22.
SMEs were more optimistic than big companies about the economic
situation, but the weak exports have been a major disappointment
to them as well.
